An elderly lady, Ms. Joan Plowright, moves into a small hotel in London to spend time with her grandson and become part of big city life. The grandson doesn’t answer her calls, the hotel isn’t what she expected, although the decorum appropriate for another time is adhered to, and Mrs. Palfrey starts to feel uneasy about her decisions of late. About that time a friendship, due to a chance encounter, starts which fills a void in both their lives. This movie is about families; especially those that aren’t biological and how we sometimes misunderstand each other. Both Ms. Plowright and Rupert Friend (in his first starring role) are wonderful as are the supporting cast who are a touch eccentric at times.
