The Honk and Holler Opening Soon By Billie Letts

My oh my, this has to be one of the sweetest books I have ever read. Characters you can really sink your teeth into and fall in love with. Set in a small town in Oklahoma, a Vietnam veteran runs the Honk and Holler which is a café serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. As you would expect there are various locals of different flavours who go to the café for food but especially company. They are greeted with coffee and conversation. There is the usual gossip mongering but also everyone just keeping up on the news of their town and its residents. Maybe clichéd but the characters include the runaway girl, the widower looking for love and the group of old men, World War II vets, who meet daily for something to do. There are several different people who converge on this little restaurant and their stories are maybe somewhat melodramatic but this is fiction and by golly coincidences do happen. Staged over a period from Christmas of one year to the next there is drama, love and sadness. What more do you want? Obviously I liked this book which was very easy to read and no problem to recommend.
